... planned for Sunday morning, was an attempt at a family event in which parents and children
could be rewarded with what they had accomplished. It was meant to allow the children to
make new friends, give them a sense of accomplishment and provide them with some fun.
For parents it was meant to provide an opportunity to meet some other Mount families and
to give them an opportunity to volunteer at their children’s school without having to donate
anything but time. As luck would have it, it rained. We postponed the clean up until later in
the day, a time that was not as convenient for many, leaving over 30 yards of wood chips
and topsoil to be spread among the beds on the schools property. Not to mention the flowers
donated from the plant fair that needed to be planted. During a season that is filled with soccer,
lacrosse, baseball, dance recitals, etc., it often feels impossible to find time. But when the rain stopped and the sun peaked through the clouds a few families found the time to pitch in.
These families went well above and beyond what was expected. They took time, after a busy
day of running around to lend a hand. Although it took longer than it should have and families
donated more time than they should have had to, the task was completed. And the day turned out being what it was supposed to be. Children laughed, got dirty, planted and played. Parents
talked, friends were made and a sense of accomplishment was achieved. The kids were
exhausted, but went to bed saying that they had a GREAT day! So to the Calisi, Kramer and
Lynch families, who pitched in at the last moment, THANK YOU. You guys are the definition
of what a community is. To those of you that were planning on coming Sunday, before the rain,
thank you. Hope to see more of you in the Fall on a rain free day!
The spring book fair is over and we are extremely happy our Mount families and staff members take such an interest in reading with their children.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our volunteers and Mount staff in their unselfish efforts.Only with your help could we have had such a smooth running fair. From set-up to break-down and more, volunteers and staff were there to assist. All involved deserve a great big “Thank You”!
Hope to see you at our fall 2009 Book Fair.Should you have any suggestions or comments, we would greatly appreciate you contacting us.
With sincere thanks,
Jen Liquori, Wendy Miller-Lynch, Elaine Sklar Book Fair Co-Chairpersons ______________________________________________________________________________________

Are YOU Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?
Fans of the popular television show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” know just how challenging the questions posed on that competitive program can be. However, for the fifth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District, those questions include many of the topics that are discussed daily in their classrooms. In an effort to reinforce the grade-level’s history curriculum and in preparation for the New York State Social Studies Exam, the school recently coordinated their own version of the famous show.
Prior to the evening competition, the school’s entire fifth grade took a 100-question social studies exam and the top student from each class qualified to compete as their class’s representatives for a schoolwide version of the show. After the class competition, five students, Michael Incardona, Grace Zhang, Dominic Lamonica, Arman Esmaili, and Rebecca Schneider, emerged as the victors and made up the student team for the final contest. Volunteering to compete against the students in the last round was sixth grade teacher Jason Hugues, Elementary Education Executive Director Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Jeffrey Carlson, Board of Education member and W.S. Mount School Liaison Carol Leister, and school principal Nathalie Lilavois.
During the school’s version of the program, the teams answered questions from a variety of categories, including presidents, the American Revolution, government, general terms, and the economy. The scores remained close during the entire battle, and the audience was impressed with each side’s knowledge of the different areas. “We felt this was a great way to not only prepare the students for the state exam but also to make learning a fun experience,” stated fifth-grade teacher Stefanie Baldante. “We are truly grateful to the adults who volunteered to participate in the program…it truly shows how invested this district, its administration, and community members are in education and our children,” added fifth-grade teacher Janet Von Bargen.
